Soldiers back from war seek out new risks

&Mdash; Only a silhouette and a few reflections off leather and shiny plastic could be seen through the white cloud of burnt rubber that choked the starting line at the Little River Dragway on this chilly night.

Out of the darkness crept Army Sgt. 1st Class Cardell Drake. The 39-year-old inched his Kawasaki ZX10 motorcycle forward and smoked the rear tire to heat it up so it would better stick to the pavement. He advanced to the starting line. And when the light turned green, he became invisible again.

Behind Drake the line of racers grew. They piloted a variety of vehicles — sport bikes, nitrous-enhanced Mustangs, dually pickups and even a four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle equipped with a wheelie bar — but many of the speed enthusiasts shared a common bond: They were soldiers.

After a 100-and-some-odd-mph run down the track, Drake said he was pleased with his improvement, but he wasn't ready to quit — not after another rider hit 154 mph on the quarter-mile. Drake had about a dozen more trips in him this night.
