Wiping – like that doesn’t go on today. And we eliminated freight training with penalties that reversed the outcome of the game if a team was caught doing it.
What we never had to worry about at all were gun cheats. Oh sure, folks tried to get hot guns onto the field or tried to turn their velocities up once on the field, but since the guns were all mechanical in operation, it was very easy to test and control things.
This is absolutely not the case with the electronic semi-autos. Robots have been tried, on-field chronoing has been tried, but the simple fact is, you can’t look at one of those guns and really know anything about how it has been set up.
With a pump gun, all it takes is a simple hands-on test (checking the screws) and a couple of shots over the chrono by a skilled and knowledgeable referee. There are those of us who know EVERY SINGLE WAY that someone can cheat with a pump gun – shims, short-stroking, spit in the barrel, degassed 12-gram, balls half-way down the barrel, angling over the chrono, rubber bands on the pump arms…
