The Biograph in Battle
(1901). It is both the first account in book form by a cinema operator to describe his work, and the first book about the filming of the war. Its subject is the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902, often described as the first media war, because cameras were there to save it.
William Kennedy Laurie Dickson had already earned his place in film history by being the man who actually invented motion pictures, when he worked as an engineer in Edison's laboratory 1883-1895.Dickson left Edison to join the Union KMCD established to operate a system of 70mm film used for both the projection screen (Biograph) and exposure to a blow-peep-show card (the Mutoscope). This force met with several embarrassing setbacks, and Buller was replaced by Lord Roberts, who took in Pretoria, June 5, 1900. Many thought the war was over by that point, but it turned into a guerrilla campaign for the next two years, characterized by some of the brutal tactics and the British use of concentration camps for Boer civilians imprisoned until Victory was acquired by Lord Kitchener in May 1902....
