Are Paintball Players Clones?
10.05.10
William Garrison, our occasional correspondent and asker of uncomfortable questions, has today decided to riff on 68Caliber ’s Paintball Then and Now theme by asking – Are today’s paintball players turning into cookie-cutter clones?
Then and Now
by William Garrison
I’m sure that the old timers in paintball or anyone who was playing as far back as the mid 90s will remember how everything seemed to be more individual. A player’s gun and gear were unique to that player. You could have ten different players, and even if they had the same model gun, you would have ten different guns. Today, it seems as if paintball players are stamped out of a big mass production machine. Everything looks the same. They have the same gun, the same pants, the same jersey, and the same mask. Have we lost something with everyone looking like they came out of an Attack of the Clones movie?
Back in the 80s and early to mid 90s a lot of the gear players used was homemade. Their camo was usually used BDUs from the local Army Navy Store. Players wore patches on their camo that came from games they had attended, the team that they were on, or the fields that they had played at. Almost no two were the same. Back in the mid 90s when we couldn’t afford the new Crosswind goggle fan that JT came out with, we built our own from Radio Shack parts. We called them “Cheap Winds” and they worked great. Back when I met who is now one of my best friends , Pete, we didn’t know his name, but we knew him by his tiger stripes, black JT Crossfire mask, and Tippmann Prolite with an Armson barrel. My gear was second hand woodland BDUs from a friend who had been in the army, with a Warhammer 40K Terminator patch, a Scott Intruder mask, and a Sheridan Piranha with a 90 round Viewloader hopper and a pistol belt with a M16 magazine pouch and a cut down pod. We would recognize each other more from our gear than our actual faces. Down time between games was usually spent talking about the new gadget we had created during the week that we were trying out (home ported barrels, silencers, mask fans, etc.). JB Weld was a paintball player’s friend. I had used it to mount a site rail from a Bushmaster pump and used an Adco Imp site.
